VIEQUES NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE, Vieques, Puerto Rico
Artist Nancy Winship Milliken and Conservationist/Biologist Andrew Milliken have combined their skill sets in a collaborative proposal of environmental art relating to conservation on the Island of Vieques, Puerto Rico. In a month-long self-designed residency they researched the complex natural and cultural resources and histories of the island, volunteered on the Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre de Vieques, and met with local NGOs and community members, while exploring the unique and abundant natural resources of the island of Vieques. The following proposal introduces four potential environmental art projects with associated conservation themes. Two of these are sculptures that can be installed outside, one is designed for the inside of the renovated Visitor Center, and one proposal is a publicly generated project with a potential for creating a book or video. The proposals embrace scale (both large and small), engage the community and offer a variety of locations and environmental considerations. They also have different timelines - some projects can be implemented soon, others may take a year or two to realize with funding.
Through these varied environmental art offerings we would embrace community engagement and bring awareness to and support for conservation efforts.
