Bread and Butter Farm

Our work is to re-imagine a collaborative working landscape that takes care of the soil, microorganisms, plants, animals, farmers, neighbors, and community that depend on this land. Through this work, we engage all members of our community in real and meaningful ways. We provide healthy, ecological food and products as well as joyful experiences that reaffirm our connection to each other and to our environment.

Cattle walk across a specially designed printing press able to handle the weight of the cows as they imprint earth into canvas when they move from one pasture to another. The outcome is a scroll of mark-making, a story telling of place.

This self designed residency is a continuous process of discovery of relationship to soil, animals and community. Throughout the years interns have worked on site on earth paintings (prints) and sculpture while also learning about the farming practices of this regenerative farm

The video “Pasture Call” is a symbolic call for change embedded in a pastoral choreography of the Vermont farming landscape. “Come On” signals to the herd it is time to move to another pasture in a farming practice that allows livestock to graze land as they did in the open savannas of old, contributing to healthy ecosystems. The calls of the farmers and of the cows symbolically let us know it is time to move towards change. Many thanks to Bread and Butter Farm for their collaborative help with this project and feeding our community and land.
